Parents search A-Level GP 8881 Paper 1 essay after an older booklet still lists twelve titles. The current school-candidate syllabus asks one essay. It does not ask a Paper 2 application question.

8881 Paper 1 is one chosen essay

Syllabus 8881 Paper 1 asks one 500-to-800-word essay from eight questions in 90 minutes. That line comes from 8881_y26_sy.pdf, opened from SEAB's 2026 school-candidate list on 13 September 2026. The list was last updated on 28 August 2026 and names General Paper as H1 code 8881.

The scheme gives Paper 1 a 50% weighting: Content 30 and Language 20. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are taken at separate sittings. Do not plan from older materials that set twelve titles.

Paper 1 is not the Paper 2 application question. Paper 2 is a different sitting on three passages of about 1,200 words in total. Its application item is worth 12 marks and is derived from those texts.

YIJC describes the application question as a response to a task derived from the texts, based on the passages as a whole. That is not a free choice from eight titles. Practising Paper 1 as if it were an unseen-passage AQ trains the wrong sitting.

Evaluation is the content job

Marks reward an evaluated argument, not a list of topic knowledge. The 8881 content bands ask for the terms of the question, conceptual engagement, evaluated illustration, and a balanced discussion of differing perspectives. Band 5 expects a well-balanced discussion with developed analysis and evaluation.

The paper description lists broad fields: society and culture, economics, politics, the arts and humanities, science and technology, and the environment. Those are sources of issues, not a menu of twelve set titles. A paragraph that only names events without judging them stays in the lower bands.
