Start With the Genre That Already Came Back for a Rewrite

Start business English writing with the genre that already came back for a rewrite. If the last request was an email, start there. If it was a report or update, start there. A brochure that lists both is not tonight's order.

A mixed writing target hides the rewrite

If email and the report both feel weak, a mixed week produces two unfinished drafts. The returned rewrite tells you which genre already costs time.

A mixed target sounds efficient: “I will fix emails and reports this month.” In practice, Monday's email stays half-rewritten because Wednesday's report also looks urgent. Nobody receives a cleaner text. Do not invent a manager score to decide the order. The rewrite request is the cost. The text that came back is the one that already spent other people's time.

Start with the genre that came back

If the last rewrite was an email, start there. If the last rewrite was a report or update, start there. Do not switch because a course brochure lists both.

• Last returned text was an email → email is this week's genre.
• Last returned text was a report, update or briefing note → that longer text is this week's genre.
• Both came back in the same week → pick the one your reader asked you to send again first.
• Nothing has come back → wait for a real rewrite. A course list is not tonight's order.

Practise one returned text this week

Rewrite the returned text once. Keep the same reader and purpose. Change only the line that caused the rewrite.

Example. Your manager sent back a client email because the next step was missing. Keep the same client and the same request. Rewrite the last two sentences so the action, owner and date sit in one place. Do not add a new report outline on the same night. Do not promise yourself a promotion from one rewrite.

If the returned text was a weekly update, keep the same reader. Fix the paragraph that caused the rewrite, often the one that hid the decision or mixed two projects. Leave the rest of last week's facts unless they are wrong.
