Drop the Option That Reuses Words but Twists the Idea

Candidates search ielts reading multiple choice after an option copied two nouns and still scored zero. The task is not a word-spotting contest. You keep the option that matches one passage idea.

Multiple choice still answers one passage idea

IELTS Reading multiple choice asks you to choose the option that matches one passage idea. The instruction may ask for one letter or more than one. The object does not change. You are not picking the option that looks busiest with passage vocabulary.

Academic and General Training both use this type. A format page will list it beside headings and gap-fills. Listing is not a method. Read the question stem first so you know which idea to find. Then look at the options as suspects, not as answers.

If the box says “choose two letters”, stop only when two options survive the same test. Do not treat the second letter as a leftover guess.

Same words can hide a twisted idea

Drop the option that reuses words but twists the idea. A live iWorld preparation table already names that trap in one row. The method is longer than a row. You have to see how the twist is built.

What you seeWhat the option doesAction
Same nouns as the passageChanges the verb, the amount, or the causeDrop it
A near-synonym of the questionMatches the sentence's actual claimKeep it for a sentence check
An extra detail from another paragraphAnswers a different questionDrop it

Typical twists: the passage says a study suggested a link; the option says the study proved it. The passage says some cities; the option says all cities. The passage says researchers questioned a theory; the option says they rejected the data. The copied nouns are bait.

Check one sentence, not a remembered gist

Check the option against one passage sentence, not against a remembered gist. Gist memory is how people keep an option that “sounds like paragraph B”. Paragraph B can mention the topic and still deny the option's verb.

Worked check. Question: “What does the writer say about the 2018 survey?” Option A reuses “2018 survey” and “parents” but says parents rejected the programme. The sentence says parents reported mixed views and asked for a longer trial. Option A is a twist. Option B says the survey produced no single parental view. That is the sentence. Keep B.

If two options both seem close, widen to the next sentence only. Do not rebuild the whole passage from memory. The extra sentence either supplies the missing qualifier or shows that both options over-claim.

A one-row trap note is not a method

A one-row trap note is not a full multiple-choice method. The section-by-section IELTS plan records the trap in a table and then moves on to Writing. The reading strategies page banks multiple choice as a cheaper type to finish before headings. Cheap is a time order, not a claim that twists disappear.

Keep those pages for paper order and four-skill planning. Stay here for the option test. iWorld Learning has no named IELTS course. This page does not convert a trap row into a score promise.

FAQ

These questions are the ones that remain after the twist test is clear.

What if the question asks for more than one answer?

Apply the same twist test to each option. Do not stop at the first familiar wording. Fill the number of letters the instruction names.

Should I read all options before I return to the passage?

Read the question and scan options for reused words, then locate one sentence. Options first without a sentence check recreates the trap.

Is multiple choice an easy IELTS Reading type?

The strategies page banks it as cheaper than headings or True, False, Not Given. Cheap is about time. Same-word traps still cost marks.
