IELTS Valid ID in Singapore: What British Council and IDP Accept
Melissa Tan 11 2026-09-02 09:05:00 编辑
Before booking IELTS in Singapore, get the identity-document rule right: the document you book with is likely the only one accepted at the test room door. British Council and IDP agree that the accepted ID depends on your immigration status, and a wrong or expired document can bar you from the test. This guide consolidates both providers' rules so you walk in prepared.
The ID you need, by status

Match yourself to one row and book with that document:
- Singapore citizen or permanent resident: your NRIC or your passport - either is accepted.
- Foreigner (non-SC/PR): your valid passport only.
Your FIN, driving licence, student pass, and work pass are not accepted as the primary identity document. These rules were current as of September 2026, but providers can update them, so do a quick check on the booking page for your exact test centre before you book.
What does not count as valid ID
In practice, the items that fail are usually these:
- Your FIN or a foreign identification number, for a non-SC/PR candidate.
- A driving licence or a school/tertiary student pass.
- An electronic copy of a passport, such as a photo or scan on your phone.
- Any document that does not match the name and details you entered in the application.
As a general rule, if you are a foreigner, bring the physical passport you booked with. Do not assume a photocopy acts as a substitute - it does not.
The same-ID and validity rule on test day
On test day, three things keep you in the room:
- Same document: bring exactly the same physical ID you used to register.
- Still valid: your document must be valid on the day of the test.
- Name match: the spelling and details must match your application.
If your passport expires, is lost, or your details change between booking and the test, contact your provider to update your record before test day rather than showing up and hoping. A missing, expired, or mismatched document usually means you cannot sit, and the fix is far easier ahead of time than at the door.
FAQ
Can I use my foreign work pass as IELTS ID in Singapore?
No. If you are not a citizen or permanent resident, your valid passport is the document you need; work passes and FIN are not accepted as primary ID.
What if my passport expires between booking and test day?
Your ID must be valid on test day. Contact your provider as soon as you know and update your record before the test rather than risking being turned away.
Is a photocopy of my passport accepted?
No. You must bring the same physical, valid document you used to register, not a copy or a phone image.
