Take, Delay, or Drop O-Level Literature from Three Habits

Literature is not a harder English Language paper

O-Level Literature asks the student to write about set texts. English Language 1184 asks for reading and writing papers on unseen material. Confirm both on the current SEAB list. The subjects share language. They do not share the same papers. A strong comprehension score does not mean the student will finish a novel and write about a line.

Three habits that show fit

Look at the last two literature tasks for: finishing the set pages, pointing to a line before giving an opinion, and writing more than a plot retell. Prestige is not a habit. Do not use exam grades from another subject as a proxy.

• Line before opinion. The student can point to a sentence or a short exchange before saying what it shows.
• More than a plot retell. The writing comments on a choice, a tone, or a contrast, not only on what happened next.

School literature teaching commonly requires set-text reading and comment on quotations. Exact tasks vary. Use the two pieces on the table, not a memory of how much the child "likes stories".

Take, delay, or drop

Take if two of the three habits are already present and the school offers the subject. Delay if the student still retells plot only. Drop if the school cannot staff the subject or the student will not finish set reading. A delay is not a lifetime ban.
