Collect O-Level Comprehension Words From Tonight's Passage

How to build vocabulary for O-Level comprehension starts with tonight's passage, not a 500-word list. Pick five words. Write the line, a one-line meaning in this passage, one near synonym, and one word that would break the tone. Swap the synonym into the sentence. Keep the card only if a listener would still answer the same question.

Pick words the question could actually ask

Use the passage you just read. Do not open a list.

  • Two words you could not paraphrase when you answered.
  • Two words that change tone if swapped (praise becomes blame, fact becomes feeling).
  • One word in a figurative line.
  • Skip rare names.
  • Skip words you already used correctly in the answers.

Five is the night. If all five were easy, you may add two more. Do not add twenty.

Make a card that stays inside the sentence

The dictionary's first sense is not always the passage sense. Guess from the line first, then check a learner dictionary.

  1. Copy the line, not the whole paragraph.
  2. Write the target word.
  3. Write a one-line meaning that fits this passage only.
  4. Write one near synonym and one tone-breaker.
  5. Read the line with the synonym. If the line changes job, the synonym fails.

The swap test before you keep the card

Replace the word in the original sentence. Keep the card only if a listener would still answer the same comprehension question.

Example. Line: "The committee's endorsement was lukewarm." Question: "What does lukewarm suggest about the committee?" A passing synonym is "unenthusiastic". A failing synonym is "warm-hearted" — the temperature meaning wrecks the suggestion. If the question was "what does X suggest", the synonym must keep that suggestion.

A prettier word that shifts tone is a fail. Put failed synonyms on the back of the card so you do not reuse them in Paper 1 writing either.

Why a word list will not save Paper 2

Lists help recognition. Paper 2 marks the meaning in this line. If a list word never appears in your last two passages, it is the wrong pile for comprehension night. No one needs a course to finish five cards. If you later want reading support, Middle School English is adjacent, not a named vocabulary course. Confirm live terms. Five cards do not promise a grade.

FAQ

Should I look up the word before I guess from the line?

Guess from the line first, then check a learner dictionary. The exam will not hand you the dictionary. A first-sense gloss that ignores the line is how students pick the wrong option.

Is five words a night enough?

Five that survive the swap test beat twenty unread list items. Add more only if the five were easy. A week of five good cards is a stack you can reread in ten minutes.
