They are two subjects, not two versions of 1184. For 2026 school candidates, SEAB lists English Language as 1184 and Literature in English as 2065.

English Language marks use of standard English

1184 examines writing, comprehension, listening and oral communication in standard English. It is the language paper most secondary students sit.

A weak 1184 script is a language leak. It is not proof that Literature should be dropped or added.

Literature marks a reading of set texts

Literature in English examines close reading of prescribed prose and drama and a response to unseen poetry. A strong 1184 script does not replace a set-text answer.
