Sec 1 Discursive and Narrative Writing

Primary school writing is mostly one game: tell the story. Secondary 1 introduces a second game, discursive writing, and the students who struggle are rarely bad writers; they simply play story rules in an argument match. The fix is knowing which game a question is asking for.

The two genres want different things from you

Narrative writing earns marks through story craft, while discursive writing earns them through balanced reasoning, so the first planning decision is which game you are playing.

Secondary guides break the essay types down the same way: narrative rewards plot, character and description; discursive rewards claims, reasons and balance. Sec 1 is when both genres appear side by side for the first time, which is why the confusion peaks this year.

Planning a narrative in five minutes

Plan a narrative by choosing a character with a want, one complication and a change, then write the ending first so the middle earns it.

  1. Name your main character and the one thing they want in this story.
  2. Choose a single complication that blocks the want.
  3. Decide the final change: what is different in the last line.
  4. Write the ending line first, then build the middle toward it.

Primary-school memorised plots cap Sec 1 narrative marks; markers have seen the same flood, storm and lost dog many times.

Planning a discursive paragraph stack

Plan a discursive essay as a stack of claim-and-reason paragraphs, with two sides represented before your stand appears in the conclusion.

  1. Turn the question into a statement you could argue either way.
  2. Draft one paragraph arguing yes, with a reason and example.
  3. Draft one paragraph arguing no, with a reason and example.
  4. Add your stand in the conclusion, using both sides fairly.

Balance does not mean fence-sitting; the conclusion still takes a position, and Singapore secondary guides set out exactly this rationale for discursive practice.

Self-test before you submit

Before submitting, check the piece against its own genre test: a story that changes someone, or an argument that fairly meets the other side.

For the narrative: is there a moment where something changes for the character? For the discursive: could a reader who disagrees say you represented them fairly? Teachers mark genre failures hardest because they are structural.

Read the question wording like a signal

Question wording signals the genre: personal experience cues ask for narrative, while do you agree or discuss cues ask for discursive writing.

Question cue Genre it signals
Write about a time when... narrative
Describe a person who... narrative or descriptive
Do you agree that... discursive
Discuss the view that... discursive
Some people say... What do you think? discursive

Hybrid prompts exist; when unsure, ask which genre lets you show more controlled skill, and signal the choice clearly in the opening so the marker reads it correctly.

FAQ

What if a question could be answered either way?

Choose the genre you can control structurally, and signal the choice clearly in the opening so the marker reads it correctly.

Is discursive the same as argumentative?

Close but not identical; discursive weighs perspectives evenly, while argumentative builds one case to win.

How long should a Sec 1 essay be?

Follow the school's brief; depth of structure matters more than length at this stage.
