Tonight, Pick Skill Work or One Paper Drill — Not Both

Sec 3 English vs Sec 4 paper drilling is a tonight decision, not a slogan about “starting early”. Skill work isolates one weak move. A drill runs a timed section to test whether that move survives the clock. Doing both in one extra night usually does neither. Read the last marked script first. Then pick one mode and stay with it.

The two modes are not the same homework

School homework can mix a short skill and a paper cut. This page is about the extra hour you control. Name the mode before you open a booklet.

A drill that reprints the same method miss is not “exam practice”. It is a photocopy of the gap. A skill night that never meets a clock is unfinished if the last comment was stamina. The last script tells you which problem you actually have.

Comments that still need skill work

Stay on skill work when the last two comments name the same method, not the clock.

• “Did not paraphrase” or “lifted whole sentences” on summary: practise three paraphrases, not another full Paper 2.
• “Wrong tone” or “missed a content point” on situational writing: rewrite one task box, not a whole Paper 1.
• “No evidence” on inference: join two clues and write one because-sentence. A timed comprehension will hide the same hole.
• The same grammar family in two scripts: sort that family. Do not add a mock paper on top.

One low mark is not a diagnosis. Two scripts with the same miss is. If the teacher wrote only “must work harder”, ask which component. Vague comments cannot choose a mode.

Comments that justify a drill tonight

A drill is useful when the skill is already visible and the failure is transfer.

• The method is correct in untimed work, but the section is unfinished.
• The student starts the wrong section first and runs out of time later.
• Listening or oral prep is fine at home and collapses only when the clock is real.
• Prelims are near and the last comment is stamina, not a new format the student has never been taught.

Use one section, not four papers. A Sec 4 sprint calendar is a different page. This page only licenses a single timed cut. If the student has never been taught summary rules, a drill will not teach them.

A four-week check on the choice

Keep the chosen mode for four weeks of extra work. Switch only when the original comment changes. Can a Sec 3 student ever do a timed Paper 1?

Yes, as a transfer check after the skill exists. It is not the weekly default. One Paper 1 after two clean skill scripts is a test, not a new lifestyle.

Do prelims mean we switch to drilling now?

Only if the last comment is timing or stamina. Method misses still need skill nights. Prelims change the calendar. They do not invent a skill the student never practised.
