Keep or Cut Singlish in a PSLE or O-Level Script

Should you use Singlish in PSLE or O-Level? Treat it as a placement test, not a verdict on the variety. The default for an exam script is Standard English. A short quoted line in a story may stay. For formal writing and most spoken-exam answers, use Standard English. The Straits Times reported MOE saying Singlish is not for formal communication, with a narrow composition exception when it is used appropriately, usually in direct speech. That is not a licence for the narrator. News reports are not the live marking scheme. Recheck current school instructions and the paper in front of you.

Dialogue can keep a local word; narration usually cannot

The surrounding sentence must stay grammatical. "She is by nature a 'kiasu' person" is a quoted flavour inside a standard sentence. "She kiasu one, always queue first" is narration leakage. A string of particles is not characterisation.

Comprehension answers and oral replies are not dialogue scenes

Can I write 'kiasu' in the story, not in speech marks?

Safer to quote it in dialogue or recast as "over-anxious to win". Unquoted narration is the usual cut. kiasu in a quoted line is not the same as kiasu in the topic sentence.

Is oral stricter than composition?

Oral still needs Standard English for explanations. A quoted example may be fine. An entire reply in particles is not. The listener has to follow you without sharing your home code.
