Oral Marks Move on the Follow-Up, Not the Script

O-Level 1184 oral examiners listen for a developed reply and a live exchange. A video retell that never takes a view is a weak reply. Replaying the planned-response script is not spoken interaction.

Confirm 1184 before you practise tonight

For 2026 school candidates, SEAB lists English Language as syllabus 1184. Open the current syllabus document from that list before you treat any mark split as final.

Start from SEAB's school-candidate list, then open the current 1184 file.

Do not invent 2027 SEC codes as tonight's paper. Do not practise from an old 1128 oral booklet and assume the listening job is the same. The 1184 paper map on this site treats Paper 4 as oral communication with a planned response and spoken interaction. Confirm the live SEAB 1184 file for wording. This page does not republish a mark scheme.

Examiners listen for a developed reply, not a retell

They listen for ideas that answer the prompt, stay organised, and use clear speech. A video retell that never takes a view is a weak reply.

A developed reply names a stance, gives a reason that belongs to the clip, and stays on that reason. “The boy is walking, then he sits, then he talks” is a retell. “He should tell the teacher because the other student cannot hear the instruction” is a reply. Confirm live 1184 wording. Clarity still matters: if the examiner cannot follow the sentence, the idea is not yet usable, however sincere it is.

The follow-up is a new listening job

No. Spoken interaction asks for a discussion on a related topic. Examiners listen for whether you stay in the exchange, not whether you replay Part 1.

The planned response is not enough on its own.

Example. Part 1 might ask what the student in the video should do. You give a short, organised view. The examiner then asks whether that advice would still hold if a friend were watching. The new job is to answer that question. Repeating “he should tell the teacher” without facing the new condition is a retell of your own script.

The one-follow-up page trains you to answer one new question without rewriting the talk. Tonight only names what the live exchange rewards after that script. Do not invent examiner questions and memorise them as if they were official.

This is not the planned-response formula page

That page times Part 1. Tonight only names what the live exchange rewards after the script.

Middle School English can host later reading and writing practice. It is not a named oral course and it does not publish examiner marks. Confirm live terms if you later want a marked secondary hour. Do not treat a class as a substitute for the SEAB 1184 document.

FAQ

A memorised script that ignores the examiner is not interaction.

Can a memorised planned response carry the spoken interaction?

No. Interaction listens for whether you answer the examiner. Replaying Part 1 is a retell.

Is this the same as the 10-minute planned-response formula?

No. That page times Part 1. Tonight names what the live exchange listens for.
