For my first teaching jobI moved to West Papua – one of the most remote places on the planet – toteach in a private language school. This was a baptism of fire to say the leastas the city’s electricity would cut out several times a week resulting in teachingclasses by torchlight (much to the kids’ amusement) and, more importantly, with no AC! However, the rewards far outweighed the challenges -l alsovolunteered at a free school for local Papuans unable to afford private tuition -and l fell in love with teaching.l strive to make my lessons as fun andengaging as possible as l believe this creates the best environment forlearning.
