Marks and minutes

Paper 1 carries 55 marks in 1 hour 10 minutes, with situational writing worth 15 and continuous writing 40, so continuous writing owns both the majority of marks and the majority of your time.

Continuous writing is worth more than twice the situational marks and needs more than twice the minutes, which surprises nobody who has abandoned a composition at paragraph three. One recent change matters for drills: from 2025 the situational prompt includes a bullet asking pupils to offer suggestions or recommendations, so format practice should cover that move.

What transfers, what does not

Planning, paragraphing, and tense control transfer between the tasks, but format discipline is situational-only and story development is continuous-only, so neither task is full practice for the other.

The transfer column is the whole argument against a common shortcut: doing stacks of situational pieces is not composition practice, and writing story after story will not polish format discipline. They are neighbours, not substitutes.

Allocate the hours

Give continuous writing the larger share of weekly practice because it carries more marks and grows slower, and keep situational writing sharp with short, regular format drills.

• Roughly two-thirds of writing practice time goes to continuous writing and full-draft feedback.
• Keep one short situational drill a week, marked against the task requirements.
• Re-balance each term by the child's own component marks, not by preference.
