How to Order from Taobao to Europe: VAT, IOSS & Steps

TideFlow 19 2026-10-27 22:24:53 Edit

European buyers can order from Taobao by using a China shopping agent or package forwarder: the agent buys the item, checks it in China, consolidates parcels and ships to an EU address. Import VAT applies to goods coming from outside the EU. For eligible distance sales in consignments not exceeding €150, the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) is a way to collect VAT at purchase rather than again at the border. From 1 July 2026, the old €150 customs-duty relief no longer applies in the same way — a temporary €3 customs duty per item can apply on qualifying low-value consignments.

This guide covers the shared EU process, IOSS, the July 2026 duty change, landed cost and first-order mistakes. Country details still follow the place of clearance — Germany or France may appear as examples, but this is not a Germany-only How-to. Tax facts come from the European Commission, checked in October 2026. To shortlist agents, use how to choose a Taobao agent for European delivery.

Can you buy from Taobao in Europe?

Yes, with an intermediary. Most Taobao sellers do not ship to EU door addresses and do not take European checkout the way Amazon does. Buyers typically:

  • Send product links to a buying agent, or
  • Buy themselves to a China warehouse and pay for forwarding.

Great Britain is not an EU customs destination for these rules — use the separate UK How-to and UK Best pages. Switzerland and Norway also need their own country checks.

For the general English workflow, see how to buy from Taobao overseas.

EU import VAT, IOSS and the €150 line

Since July 2021, the VAT exemption for very low-value imports (the old €22 relief) is gone: imported goods are subject to VAT. Two simplifications matter for consumers:

PathWhat it means for youTypical effect at the border
IOSS used correctly (eligible distance sales, consignment intrinsic value ≤ €150, non-excise)VAT collected when you pay for the supplyCorresponding import can be VAT-exempt at customs when the IOSS number is declared
No IOSS (Special Arrangements or standard)Import VAT often collected by postal operator/courierYou may pay VAT (+ handling) before delivery

Important clarifications:

  • IOSS is not “VAT-free shopping.” It changes when and how VAT is declared.
  • IOSS is not a customs-duty waiver. Duty rules are separate (see next section).
  • “Tax-included,” “IOSS,” and “DDP” labels are not interchangeable — ask what the quote includes for your postcode.

What changed on 1 July 2026?

The European Commission states that from 1 July 2026 the €150 customs-duty relief threshold is abolished for the low-value consignments it covered. A temporary €3 customs duty per item applies to qualifying consignments with intrinsic value not exceeding €150, generally through 1 July 2028.

Commission guidance illustrates calculation by tariff item category, not simply “€3 per parcel”:

  • 5 T-shirts → €3 (one item category in the example)
  • 1 T-shirt + 1 watch → €6 (two items)

Ask your agent how any temporary duty is reflected in the shipping quote. Do not invent a consumer surcharge that the quote does not show. Business restocks, higher-value consignments and non-qualifying entries need their own calculation.

What does a Taobao order to Europe really cost?

Trade-off: a 0% purchasing fee agent can beat an 8% goods fee on a single cheap item; multi-platform hauls with PayPal and EUR display may still favour comparing cfans on the full total. For cost-focused comparison pages, see compare Taobao shipping and VAT costs to Europe.

How to order from Taobao to Europe, step by step

  1. Select the product and copy the link; note batteries, liquids, powders and brand-sensitive goods.
  2. Submit to an agent with size/colour/quantity notes (or ship to your own forwarder address).
  3. Pay for the goods — separate from international freight.
  4. Wait for warehouse arrival. Sellers often ship in 3–7 days; warehouse intake often 3–5 working days (cfans).
  5. Check QC photos (cfans: 3–5 standard photos; returns within 5 days of In Warehouse, seller approval). Storage: 60 days free at cfans — confirm on your account.
  6. Consolidate and choose an EU line. Ask about IOSS/tax-included terms, the temporary duty, and product acceptance to your postcode.
  7. Pay freight, track, and receive. Keep invoices and warehouse photos if you need a claim.

Country notes (examples, not separate How-tos)

  • Germany / France / Spain / Poland: EU destinations share the VAT/IOSS framework above; local carriers and VAT rates still differ. For Germany-specific agent selection only, see the Taobao agent guide for Germany — it is a Best page, not a process substitute.
  • Great Britain: different £135 rules — do not apply this EU article.
  • Non-EU Europe (e.g. Switzerland, Norway): separate customs regimes; confirm before ordering.

Safety and payment checks before you fund an account are covered in whether a Taobao agent is safe.

Common mistakes

  1. Treating IOSS as “no tax.”
  2. Ignoring the July 2026 temporary duty while using old “under €150 = duty free” blogs.
  3. Under-declaring value (compliance risk; not advised).
  4. Shipping restricted goods on a general line.
  5. Letting free storage expire while waiting for one delayed seller.

FAQ

Does Taobao ship directly to the EU?

Usually not for ordinary sellers. Most buyers use an agent or China warehouse forwarder.

Does IOSS mean I pay no VAT?

No. IOSS collects VAT on eligible ≤€150 distance sales at purchase so the matching import can avoid a second VAT charge at customs when declared correctly.

Do I still pay customs duty under €150?

From 1 July 2026, the previous duty relief is abolished for covered consignments; a temporary €3 per item can apply on qualifying shipments. Confirm how your quote handles it.

Can I use PayPal and pay in EUR?

Taobao itself uses Alipay. Agents may accept PayPal and show EUR. cfans lists PayPal and EUR among supported display currencies.

Is consolidating always cheaper?

No. A larger box can raise volumetric weight. Compare packed quotes.

Where should I compare agents for Europe?

Start with the Europe agent shortlist linked in the introduction after you understand the steps on this page.

Bottom line

Order to Europe as a two-payment workflow (goods, then freight), budget for VAT every time, and treat IOSS and the July 2026 €3 duty as separate questions from the shipping sticker price. When you need selection help, open the Europe Best page; when you need cost worksheets, use the Europe cost comparison. You can also run a cfans estimate and price it against a 0% purchasing-fee option.
