A Line-by-Line Routine for O-Level Paper 1 Editing

O-Level Paper 1 editing is a grammar hunt inside a given passage, not a rewrite of the whole text. Read once for the controlling tense, once for a short list of grammar types, and once to place clean-line ticks if the instruction box uses them. Confirm the live SEAB paper and your school's box before you drill. Do not spend this night editing a situational-writing letter.

What this section is — and what it is not

Typical school and O-Level-style papers give a short passage. First and last lines are often correct. You correct grammar in other lines and tick clean lines. Spelling and punctuation are usually not the target. That layout is common; it is not a promise that every future paper will look the same.

Do not quote a mark total as if it cannot change. Official formats live on the current SEAB O-Level pages. If your school's instruction box differs, follow that box. Write only the corrected word. Do not recast the sentence in your own style.

Three passes on one passage

One passage is enough for tonight. Three passes beat one anxious skim.

1. Pass 1: read the whole passage. Mark the controlling tense and who is speaking. Do not correct yet.
2. Pass 2: line by line, hunt agreement, tense, article, preposition, pronoun, and word form. Circle one error per line if the paper uses that rule.
3. Pass 3: force yourself to leave clean lines ticked when the box asks for them. Many school papers use two clean lines; do not invent a quota if yours does not.
4. Write only the corrected word in the space. A rewritten clause is the wrong product.

A short hunt list, not ten new chapters

There is no official list of exactly ten error types. Use the last marked editing paper.

• Practise the two types you already miss.
• A type that never appears in your last three papers can wait.
• If the same type appears more than twice on one passage, recheck those lines before you celebrate.
• Do not open a new grammar chapter because a website published a longer menu.
