Which Words May Enter Tonight's O-Level Paper 1

Paper 1 language marks reward words you can explain and place. Tonight you keep eight. Say a one-line meaning. Put the word in tonight's plan. Cut it if the spoken definition fails. Do not open a 100-word list. Do not reuse last night's Paper 2 passage cards unless the word fits this purpose and audience.

A list word that you cannot explain will cost language marks

There is no official SEAB word list for Paper 1. A misused "ubiquitous" reads as stuffing. Eight words you can explain beat fifty you half-remember. Accuracy and range both matter. Range without accuracy is the faster way to lose a language impression. If you cannot say the meaning aloud, the word is not ready for a 350-to-500-word essay or a formal email.

Build tonight's eight from last week's script

  1. Open the last marked composition or situational piece.
  2. Keep four words the marker did not circle.
  3. Add four from the new topic only if you can use each in a new sentence now.
  4. Write the eight on one card. Close every theme-list PDF.
  5. If you cannot find four clean keepers, keep fewer. Do not pad with strangers.

A downloaded "A1 distinction" list stays closed until these eight exist. Last week's safe words are more useful than tonight's impressive strangers.

The explain-then-place test

For each word, do three things in order. Say a one-line meaning. Say one wrong cousin — a word people confuse with it. Write the word into tonight's plan in a sentence you would actually use.

Candidate: "reluctant". Meaning: "not willing, but still doing it". Wrong cousin: "lazy". Place: "The prefect was reluctant to report her classmate, but she did."

Keep that word. Cut "ubiquitous" if your spoken definition is "very good" or if the sentence could say "common" with no loss. A correct definition with a forced, unnatural sentence still fails. The plan has to sound like you.

FAQ

May I keep idioms in the eight?

Only if you have used the idiom correctly in two previous scripts. One lucky use is not a keeper. A half-remembered idiom is stuffing.

Do situational writing and continuous writing share the same eight?

Share only register-safe words. A narrative verb that fails a formal email goes to the cut pile for situational-writing night.
