Judge a P3 Writing Class from Two Recent Stories

A Primary 3 creative writing class and a PSLE-oriented composition class do different jobs. This page lets you judge the class from the child's last two stories. It does not teach how to finish a P3 story, and it does not choose a 2026 composition programme.

Two classes, two jobs

A creative writing class trains ideas and voice. A PSLE-oriented composition class trains theme fit, picture use and a finished arc. P3 needs ideas first, but not ideas with no ending. A school period may mix both jobs. Judge the work, not the brochure.

P3 composition guidance in Singapore usually asks for a complete sequence, not exam-theme tactics. Later PSLE composition advice warns that off-theme or memorised stories lose content marks. Those later rules are not tonight's lesson. They are the reason you check whether the current class builds control.

Read the last two stories, not the centre flyer

Look for a finished ending, a clear problem, one picture or theme held to the end, and sentences the child can read back. Ideas without those four stay creative play.

• Finished ending. The problem is resolved or clearly left unfinished on purpose, not because time ran out mid-sentence.
• Clear problem. Something goes wrong or someone wants something. A list of nice events is not a story yet.
• One picture or theme held. If the homework showed a playground, the ending still belongs to that playground.
• Readable sentences. The child can read the piece aloud. A page of copied "good phrases" the child cannot voice is not control.

Do not score vocabulary lists. A rare word in a story that never ends is still an unfinished story.

Keep, add a constraint, or switch type

Keep the class if three of four signals appear. Add a home constraint — finish the ending, hold one picture — if ideas are strong but the arc breaks. Switch type only if both stories still have no ending after a month of constraints. Do not switch after one weak story.

Use the stories as a tree, not a feeling about the teacher.

• Three or four signals present. Keep the class. Ask the teacher to keep demanding an ending. Do not add a second writing class this term.
• Ideas strong, ending or theme missing. Keep the class and add one home constraint: the last five minutes of homework are for the ending only, or the child must point to the picture in the last paragraph.
• Both stories still have no ending after a month of that constraint. Switch type. You need a class that marks the arc, not another idea prompt.
• The child only recites a model. That is the other failure. A PSLE-styled class that never lets the child change the story is also the wrong type for P3.

What this decision cannot settle

P3 is not PSLE year. The decision is whether the current class builds control. It does not choose a 2026 composition programme. One extra writing hour at home can be the constraint; a class change is later.

Can we keep the creative class and add PSLE drills at home?

Add a finish-the-ending constraint, not a stack of model essays. Model essays teach later-year phrases the child cannot yet own.

My child loves ideas but never ends the story. Is that still fine in P3?

Ideas are useful. A missing ending is the first signal to constrain, not to praise only. P3 can stay playful and still finish.

When should we evaluate a marked writing class?
