One Scan for P4 Cloze Blanks and Editing Lines

Primary 4 language-use papers often pair a grammar cloze with an editing passage. The two tasks look different on the page. They reward the same three checks. This page teaches one scan for both. It is not the page that fixes grammar inside a composition paragraph.

Cloze fills a blank; editing finds a break

Grammar cloze asks for a missing word from a box or from grammar sense. Editing asks you to find and fix a wrong word already on the line. Both need the same word-class check. School papers vary the helping box and the mix of spelling versus grammar. Check the paper in front of you. Do not treat a publisher's three-level workbook as a national paper.

Task What the page gives you What you must do Shared check

Grammar cloze

A passage with blanks. Sometimes a box of helping words.

Supply a word that fits grammar and the sentence.

Tense, subject-verb pair, word class.

Editing

A passage with a wrong word already printed, or a mix of spelling and grammar breaks.

Find the break and write the correct word.

Tense, subject-verb pair, word class.

A 2026 school Primary 4 briefing presents grammar as used inside language-use tasks, often in a STELLAR-style context, not as a stand-alone national exam. That is why a perfect composition paragraph still does not prove these two paper tasks, and why a perfect cloze still does not prove writing accuracy. Keep the other job on its own night.

The three checks both papers reward

Check tense of the passage, subject-verb pair, and whether the word is a noun, verb or connector. Do this before you write a cloze word or circle an editing error. Do not add vocabulary hunches until the three checks pass.

  1. Tense of the passage. Read the first two complete sentences. If the passage is in the past, a present verb in the blank or on the line is a candidate error.
  2. Subject-verb pair. Find who or what the verb belongs to. Ignore the words stuffed between them. The box of crayons … is, not are, if the subject is box.
  3. Word class. Ask whether the slot wants a noun, a verb, or a connector such as because or however. A helping box is a shortlist after this question, not before it.

Worked cloze. Yesterday the class _____ to the hall when the bell rang. Tense is past. Subject is class. The slot is a verb. Walked fits. Walking fails the verb-form check even if it feels busy.

Worked editing. The team of players were tired after the match. If the school paper treats team as the head noun, the pair is team was. Confirm against the teacher's marking. Do not start a debate about collective nouns at the table; use the scheme on that script.

Tonight: one cloze passage and one editing passage

Do one short grammar cloze, then one short editing passage, using the same three checks. Stop after those two. Do not add comprehension cloze tonight; that is a different Primary 6-style task with no helping box and a vocabulary load.

  1. Set a twenty-minute cap. One cloze, one editing passage, no third paper.
  2. Cloze first, with the box covered if there is one. Run the three checks, then uncover the box and see whether your word is there or a close form is.
  3. Editing second, line by line. Use the same three checks. If the paper splits spelling from grammar, finish the grammar lines with the scan and treat spelling as a second, shorter pass.
  4. Write the failed check in the margin. Tense, pair, or class. That label is tomorrow's drill, not a new book.

A two-week check on the shared habit

Keep the last four passages. The same check — tense, agreement, or word class — should cause fewer repeats. Two weeks is a review window, not a mark promise.

  • The margin labels cluster on one check, and that check's count drops by week two.
  • The child can name the check before circling: The story is in the past or The subject is box.
  • A fresh school language-use paper, marked by the teacher, shows fewer slips in that same check.

If the child still cannot name the word class after two weeks, more workbooks will not create the scan. iWorld Learning's Primary School English page describes grammar in context and small-group practice. Confirm live trial terms there. This article does not state a campus or a fee. Keep spelling edits separate if the paper splits them; a class helps when the child cannot name the word class.

FAQ

Is this the same as fixing grammar in a P4 composition?

No. Composition grammar is production. This page is two paper tasks that start from a printed passage. Keep the write-aloud-fix work on a different night.

My child's paper has a helping-word box. Does the scan change?

Use the box after the three checks, not before. The box is a shortlist, not the first move. If two box words fit the class, the tense check usually decides.

When does a class help?

When the child still cannot name tense or word class after two weeks. Evaluate Primary School English then. Confirm current format on that page.
