P5 writing asks for development, not a longer P4 tale

School papers vary. Do not invent a national P5 mark scheme. What parents usually see is a longer clock, a theme that must stay visible, and a conflict that is planned rather than discovered in the last paragraph. P5 also starts to look like the PSLE Paper 1 family — situational writing plus a longer continuous piece — but the school's paper is the one that counts this year. Recheck that paper before you buy PSLE booklets.

• Openings that burn half the time on weather and waking up.
• Copied “wow phrases” that do not belong to the conflict.

These are guidance patterns, not official penalty codes. If the teacher wrote something else — tense, handwriting, missing paragraphing — fix that first. Do not chase a P5 identity while the script is still unreadable.

What to mark on the next two P5 scripts

• Highlight the turning point in one colour. If you cannot find it, the plot is still a list.
• Underline the theme word in the middle third. If it appears only at the ends, the theme is a wrapper.
• Ask the child to point to the planned ending in the pre-writing notes. If there are no notes, that is the first habit to add.

Do not convert either script into an AL prediction. Achievement Levels belong to a later paper and a later year. You are only testing whether P4 habits still fit P5 comments.

When a writing class is the next check
