Which PSLE English component loses the most marks

Start by looking at the two heaviest parts of the exam: the writing paper (Situational and Continuous Writing) and Paper 2, which holds comprehension and language use. Ask one question about a recent paper: which of these two loses more marks, not what the total score was. Answering technique and comprehension usually account for more lost marks than isolated grammar, but the only way to know for your child is to look at where the paper was marked down.

Do not rely on memory. Take the most recent school paper or a practice paper you have marked, and read through the written feedback section by section. That breakdown, not the grand total, is your starting point.

A parent-run diagnostic from one recent paper

Here is the diagnostic, and it takes about half an hour the first time you run it:

1. Pick one recent paper your child wrote under exam conditions.
2. Tally every wrong or heavily marked-down item into a family: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, answering technique, or timing/careless.
3. Count each family across the whole paper, not just one section.
4. Write the two families with the highest counts at the top of a page.

Use your child's own paper, not a generic sample from the internet. A bought sample can point you at a problem the child does not actually have. Your child's real errors are the reliable signal.

Reading the tally: careless versus conceptual

Once you have a tally, separate the two kinds of error. A family that recurs across different sections usually signals a concept gap - something the child does not yet control. A one-off slip in a single spot is more likely careless. Fix the recurring families first; picking up a careless point or two rarely changes the outcome as much as closing a real gap.

Look for patterns within the top family. Three comprehension answers that all miss the "explain" part of a question are not three separate mistakes - they are one answering-technique gap. Naming the pattern turns a vague worry into a target you can practise.

A one-month check that the fix is holding

The diagnostic only earns its keep if you check it again. Put the two priority families on a simple tracker:

• Keep the paper you diagnosed as your baseline.
• Give your child one new paper after a month of focused practice.
• Tally the same two families and compare the counts.
• Treat success as the family appearing less often, even if other new errors show up.

One month is a sensible review window, not a promise of mastery. If a family has not budged after two review cycles, either the practice is not targeting the real skill or the gap needs a pair of teaching eyes on it - which is where structured help comes in.
