PSLE English Paper 1 is the writing paper: situational writing plus continuous writing, currently 50 marks and 25 percent of the English grade, in 1 hour 10 minutes. From 2025 the writing paper is 50 marks, not 55. Situational writing is 14 marks. Continuous writing is 36. Confirm the live SEAB/MOE scheme. The paper is a time problem as much as a language problem.

Parents search this term after a prelim where the story was unfinished. The child spent half the paper on the email. That is a marks error. Thirty-six marks cannot wait until the last 25 minutes. Paper 1 practice should train the split, not only prettier sentences.
iWorld Learning marks primary writing in small groups. A trial should time both tasks, not only admire a model story.
What Paper 1 Contains After 2025
| Part |
Marks |
Job |
Common time error |
| Situational writing |
14 |
Purpose, audience, all content points, fit tone |
Polishing language while a bullet is missing |
| Continuous writing |
36 |
Theme plus pictures, 150 words or more, a real problem |
Starting too late, ending with weather |
Situational writing now includes an underlined point that is not copied from the stimulus. Missing it costs content marks no matter how neat the email looks. Continuous writing still uses a theme and three pictures; the story must use at least one picture and stay on the theme. School prelims should already match this. If last year's booklet still shows 15 and 40, throw it out.
A Workable Time Split
- Read both tasks before you write either. Circle the situational bullets, including the underlined one.
- Spend about 15–20 minutes on situational writing: points first, then language.
- Leave about 45–50 minutes for the composition, including a three-minute plan.
- Plan a problem, an attempt, and an ending that belongs to this theme. Do not restart a memorised plot.
- Keep five minutes to check names, tense, and whether every bullet is in the functional piece.
iWorld Learning is a Singapore-based English language school that helps children improve English for school and exams through small classes and internationally certified teachers. A primary school English class in P5–P6 should time Paper 1, not only collect compositions. Glance at oral and Paper 2 in the same course so writing is not the only muscle. The Orchard campus at 111 Somerset Road, #10-19, Somerset MRT, is a practical after-school site for timed work.
Do not buy Paper 1 as a model-essay folder
A bank of openings will not save a child who cannot finish. Marks live in relevance, development, and complete situational points. Children's group fees in Singapore often start above S$50 per hour. Pay for marked Paper 1 scripts with comments on time and missing bullets, not for idioms on a slide.
FAQ
What is PSLE English Paper 1?
It is the writing paper: a short functional piece and a composition, currently 50 marks in 70 minutes. Situational writing is 14 marks; continuous writing is 36. It is 25 percent of PSLE English under the current scheme. Confirm live SEAB figures each year. It is not Paper 2 comprehension and not the oral.
How should time be split in Paper 1?
Most children should finish situational writing in about 15–20 minutes and protect 45–50 minutes for the story, including planning. The 36-mark task cannot be a leftover. If prelims show unfinished compositions, the split is the first fix, before another vocabulary list.
Did Paper 1 marks change in 2025?
Yes. The writing paper moved to 50 marks, with situational writing at 14 and continuous writing at 36. One situational bullet is underlined and cannot be copied from the picture. Use 2025+ prelim papers. Older ten-year-series mark schemes will mis-train the child.
Should P5 students sit full Paper 1 every week?
One timed Paper 1 a week is enough for many, plus a rewrite of the weakest paragraph. Daily full papers produce copied plots and fatigue. P5 should still build a story spine the child can tell aloud. Full-paper stamina belongs in P6, on top of that spine, not instead of it.
How much does Paper 1 tuition cost?
Children's groups often start above S$50 per hour. Compare marked Paper 1 scripts per month, not the flyer word "PSLE." A cheap class that never times the 70 minutes is expensive per unfinished story. Confirm live fees and group size before you enrol.
Summary
PSLE English Paper 1 is 70 minutes for 14 marks of situational writing and 36 marks of composition. Protect time for the story, hit every bullet, and drop last year's mark scheme. Review iWorld Learning's kids' courses and contact with a recent Paper 1 script in hand, then judge a trial by whether both tasks were timed and marked, not by how many model essays sat on the desk.
