Accept, Adapt, or Abandon the Plan Before You Write

A PSLE composition irrelevant story is a content problem, even when the language is fluent. SEAB's public guidance credits relevant, well-developed responses that address the topic. Recheck the current syllabus PDF before you quote marks. Tonight, do not write until the plan passes a three-minute test. If you are already two paragraphs in, use the brake. Do not drop the picture into the last line and hope.

Relevance is a published demand, not a style tip

Parents hear a lot of unofficial scoring boxes: show-not-tell, a moral, a five-part mountain, a quota of idioms. Those may help a story become relevant and developed. They are not, by themselves, published SEAB scoring boxes. What the public clarification does say is that pupils are credited for relevant, well-developed work that addresses the topic, with room for originality. A fluent story that never becomes the topic is still the wrong task.

Do not invent a fixed content-versus-language split unless the current PDF states it. Do not tell a child that “language can save an off-topic plot”. It usually cannot.

A three-minute accept, adapt or abandon test

1. Write the topic word in the margin. If the conflict cannot say that word honestly, the plan is already weak.
2. Write one sentence for the conflict: who wants what, and what goes wrong.
3. Write how one picture changes a decision. If the picture can be removed and the plot stays identical, the link is a mention, not a use.
4. Accept the plan only if all three lines are filled. Adapt by changing the conflict or the picture. Abandon and pick another angle if both still fail.

Current public guides say the story must use at least one picture meaningfully. Forcing all three pictures can create irrelevance if the third picture drags in a new plot. Using all three is allowed. It is not required for this test.

The mid-story brake

Reread the topic word after the second paragraph. If the last paragraph could sit in another story — a generic friendship outing, a generic lost-and-found — cut it. Write the missing conflict. Do not add a last-line mention of the picture or a proverb that names the theme. A late sticker does not repair irrelevance. Markers see the sticker.

If time is almost gone, finish a relevant shorter ending. An incomplete relevant story is usually safer than a finished story about the wrong event.

A memorised plot is irrelevant until it passes the test

Reuse structure: a start, a turn, an end. Do not reuse a locked plot. If the practised ending cannot hold tonight's topic word, it is irrelevant tonight. This page does not ban preparation. It bans the hope that a favourite story will fit every picture set. If you cannot adapt in three minutes, abandon. Write a simpler relevant story.
