When a Comprehension Answer Is a Lift or Only Half
Melissa Tan 50 2026-09-04 13:39:14 编辑
Comprehension lift versus a half-answer is a sort, not a pep talk. A lift pastes a long sentence from the passage and hopes the marker finds the point. A half-answer names one idea on a two-mark or two-part question. Tonight, label each lost open-ended mark L or H. Rewrite one lift and one half-answer. Stop there.
A lift copies; a half-answer stops too soon
Both misses can look "answered" to a child. The marked paper already told you they were not enough. Ignore spelling on this pass.
Miss |
![]() What you see |
What the rewrite must add |
|---|---|---|
Lift |
A long copied sentence; the question word (why, how, what) is missing |
Keep the key phrase, drop the rest, answer the question word |
Half-answer |
One correct idea on a two-mark or two-part item |
The second point, or the evidence the scheme asked for |
Some true/false evidence rows allow a short lift. That is not a free pass for every question. A wrong inference is a third pile. Do not force it into L or H.
Sort tonight's paper into two columns
Use the paper in hand, not a memory of last year's PSLE. School schemes differ.
- Find each lost open-ended mark. Skip MCQ.
- Ask: did the child copy a chunk, or miss a required point?
- Write L or H in the margin.
- Count the columns. The larger column is tonight's main job.
- If an answer is simply the wrong idea, park it in a third pile and leave it for another night.
Rewrite one lift and one half-answer
Do not rewrite the booklet. Two repaired answers teach the sort. More than that becomes a new paper.
Lift example. Question: "Why did Mei leave the hall early?" Copied sentence: "Mei packed her bag, looked at the clock, and left the hall before the last item." Rewrite: "She left early because she saw the time and still had to catch the last bus." The clock stays; the inventory of packing goes.
Half-answer example. A 2-mark "how do you know" item that only says "She was angry." Rewrite: "She was angry because she slammed the door and walked out without answering." Conclusion plus evidence.
If the larger column is L, pick the longest paste. If it is H, pick the 2-mark item with one lonely clause. iWorld Learning's Primary School English page can mark comprehension later if you want a second reader. Confirm live terms. No class promises open-ended bands.
When a short lift is still acceptable
A short quoted phrase can be the whole task for vocabulary-in-context or some evidence rows. If the question says "from the passage" and asks for a word or phrase, a tight lift is the job. Wholesale sentence paste on a why/how item is not. Follow the paper in hand. Grammar slips on open-ended items are usually not the first pile; finish L and H first.
FAQ
Do grammar mistakes lose comprehension marks?
Many school schemes mark content first. Fix lift and half-answer before hunting spelling. If a grammar slip makes the idea unreadable, repair that sentence only.
Can my child lift for true or false evidence?
Only when the row asks for passage evidence and a short phrase is enough. Do not paste the whole paragraph. If the statement needs an inference, a lift will not finish the row.
