How a Primary 3 Child Should Use a Story Mountain

A Primary 3 story mountain is a five-minute map, not the composition. Fill five boxes with short phrases. When the child can say the story in 20 seconds, stop planning and write the first paragraph. Do not add a second mountain, a colouring step, or PSLE three-picture choices. Tonight ends when the first paragraph is on the page.

Five boxes, one job each

One short phrase per box. No full sentences yet. Fit the boxes to the school paper in hand — picture series and theme papers both work if you do not overfill.

• Open: who and where.
• Rise: the first problem.
• Peak: the hardest moment.
• Fall: how it starts to settle.
• Close: how the character ends.

If the child writes a paragraph in every box, the mountain has already stolen the story. Cross out extra words until each box holds a phrase you can read in one breath.

Fill the mountain in five minutes

Set a timer where the child can see it. This is school narrative practice, not a PSLE three-picture paper.

1. The child says each box aloud first.
2. Then writes three to six words in that box.
3. If a box is empty at 5:00, write a simple default: lost wallet, late bus, spilled drink.
4. Do not invent a fire, a death, or a television rescue to fill the peak.
5. When the timer ends, the mountain is finished whether it looks pretty or not.

Stop planning when the first paragraph can start

The mountain is done when each box has a phrase and the child can tell the story in 20 seconds. Then write.

• No second mountain.
• No last-minute word bank copied from a model.
• No colouring, stickers, or "just one more idea".
• The first paragraph starts from the Open box only. The peak waits its turn.

A pretty mountain that never becomes a story fails. If the child stares at the peak, point to the Open box and ask for the first sentence about who and where.

Do not pull out three-picture PSLE prompts. Primary 3 practice should finish a short school story. Save PSLE picture choices for later years. If the child already writes a full arc without the mountain, use the mountain only when the story stalls halfway. Must every picture in a school paper go on the mountain?

Only the pictures the school question requires. Do not force unused pictures into extra boxes. Extra pictures are how a short P3 story becomes a list.
