ESL Class for New Immigrants: Daily Tasks Before Workplace English

Melissa Tan 12 2026-10-24 11:31:58 Edit

For a new immigrant, the first English class should cover the tasks of the next 30 days: a clinic, a lease, a child’s school, a neighbour. Workplace English comes after those tasks are survivable, not before, and not because a job title sounds senior. This page is for adults who have just arrived. It is not an immigration guide and it does not discuss passes or visas.

Rank the Next 30 Days

List what already happened this month. Put the class on the highest item you could not complete in English.

  1. Health and housing. Book a visit, describe a symptom, understand a deposit or a repair. If this fails, start here.
  2. School or childcare admin. Read a message from the school and reply with a date. Parents often need this before they need meeting English.
  3. Neighbourhood talk. Greet, ask a simple question, end a conversation. This is Daily English, not a presentation skill.
  4. The actual job, if you are already in it. A weekly meeting or a client email. Only this row points to Business English, and only for the part daily life does not cover.

Someone who starts work in week one can take both, in that order of urgency: keep Daily English on the rows that still break, and add Business English for the meeting. Do not replace the clinic conversation with slide language.

What the First Class Should Contain

iWorld Learning’s Daily English course is aimed at working adults, parents, newcomers, and beginners. The public page describes groups of 6–8, a placement test, and topics such as daily errands and social talk, with levels from foundation upward. That is the matching first class for rows 1 to 3.

Business English, on its own page, is for people who already speak English and want emails, meetings, and presentations, from a pre-intermediate level. It is the wrong first purchase if you cannot yet handle row 1. It is the right second purchase when row 4 is the remaining gap.

A useful trial for a newcomer is not a tour. Bring one real task: a school message, a repair issue, or a short introduction. Ask the teacher to make you speak it. The Orchard campus at TripleOne Somerset, 111 Somerset Road, is beside Somerset MRT, which matters if you are still learning the train network as well as the language.

What This Page Does Not Decide

It does not tell you which pass you need, which employer will hire you, or how fast you will “settle”. Those are not English-class outcomes. It also does not assume a nationality. A course page written for one language background can be a useful extra; it is not this decision. The decision is the order of tasks.

If you want a wider newcomer overview, read English courses for new immigrants after you have ranked the four rows. Use that article for context, and use the ranking here to choose the first timetable.

Questions New Arrivals Ask

I already use English at work. Do I still need Daily English?

If work English is narrow and the clinic or the lease still fails, yes. Workplace fluency does not automatically transfer to those counters. Keep the work class only for the meeting or the email.

Should my spouse and I join the same class?

Only if the placement puts you at the same level and you need the same row. Different levels in one room slow both people. Sit the placement separately.

How soon should I add Business English?

When you can complete rows 1 to 3 without a translator, and a real meeting is now the thing you avoid. Ask the school to look at a two-minute work update before they move you.

Book a placement for Daily English against your highest broken daily task. Add Business English only for the work task that remains.
