Is My Primary 4 Writing Class Working? Four Signs

Melissa Tan 12 2026-10-24 12:00:32 Edit

A Primary 4 writing class is working only if four later pieces of work change. One higher score does not prove it. One bad score does not disprove it. Primary 4 is when continuous writing starts to demand a real sequence, not a longer caption. Look at the writing, not the sticker.

Four Signs on Four Pieces of Work

Keep the compositions your child wrote in class, with the teacher’s marks still on them. You need four, from different weeks, on different topics.

The story fits this questionCharacters and the problem change when the question changes. The same rescue, the same rainy day, or the same ending appears every week with the names swapped.
The comment can be used againThe teacher names one decision: “start the problem earlier” or “keep the past tense after paragraph two”.The page says “good try” or “grammar” with no example.
A new topic shows the editOn a fresh question, your child can point to one place they changed because of last week’s comment. They can recite the old correction and still repeat it in the new story.
The error type shrinksThe same miss, such as tense jumps or no ending, appears less often across the four scripts. Each script has a new comment and the old error is untouched.

MOE’s primary English curriculum treats writing as part of the language course across the six years, not as a vocabulary contest. A class that adds rare words but never changes the four signs is decorating the same draft.

Three Decisions, Each With a Threshold

Stay, and review again next term if at least three signs are present, including the new-topic edit. The class is doing the job even if the latest score dipped.

Stay one more month, then look again if the comments are specific but the new topic does not show them yet. Ask the teacher what single decision next month’s lesson will repeat. If they cannot name it, you are in the third outcome, not this one.

Change class if two or more signs are missing after four scripts, or if every story is a memorised model. Changing is about the feedback loop, not about finding a “top” centre. A new class should start by reading those four scripts. A centre that will not look at them will repeat the same empty praise.

Do not leave in week two because the first composition was hard. Primary 4 topics feel harder than Primary 3 picture sentences. Difficulty alone is not a failed class.

What to Ask the Teacher

  • Which one weakness are you targeting this month?
  • Can my child rewrite one paragraph, or do they only copy your correction?
  • Will the next topic be new, so we can see if the last comment transferred?

iWorld Learning’s Primary School English course includes writing alongside reading and grammar, in small groups or 1-to-1, after a placement rather than by age label alone. That is relevant if the four scripts show a feedback problem you want a new room to tackle. It is not a promise of a PSLE grade. The campus for a look at the class is TripleOne Somerset, 111 Somerset Road. Bring the four scripts to the trial and ask the teacher to mark one paragraph in front of you.

A general writing guide is on how to improve primary school English writing. Use it for technique. Use the four signs here for the stay-or-switch decision.

Questions Parents Ask at Primary 4

The score went up. Can I ignore the four signs?

No. A memorised story can score well on a similar question and collapse on the next one. If sign one is missing, the higher score is not evidence the class is teaching writing.

How long should I wait before judging?

Four different class compositions. That is often a month of weekly lessons. Judging on a single holiday worksheet is too fast. Waiting a year with no specific comments is too slow.

Should Primary 4 already be full PSLE timed practice?

Not as the only activity. Timed work shows stamina. It does not show whether a comment transferred. Keep at least some lessons on planning and rewriting, then add timing once the four signs are moving.

Lay out four scripts before the next renewal. If you want a second opinion on the comments, book a Primary School English trial and ask for one paragraph marked in the lesson, not a score forecast.
