How a Primary 4 Child Keeps Tense and Full Stops in One Paragraph

Tonight is one Primary 4 paragraph, not a grammar booklet. Circle every verb. Box every full stop. Then rewrite the same events so the verbs stay in one tense and every sentence actually ends. A correct "He goes" on a worksheet does not prove the story paragraph will hold.

Tense slips and run-ons are the same control problem

In a P4 story paragraph the child often changes tense when a sentence never ends. A missing full stop lets the next verb float. "He ran to the gate he is waving at the bus" is one leak, not two separate chapters. Fixing only subject-verb agreement on a cloze page will not stop that leak in the child's own writing. One correct worksheet item is not proof the paragraph holds.

Mark verbs in one colour and stops in another

Take one school paragraph of six to ten lines. Do not mark a whole composition tonight.

1. Circle every verb in one colour.
2. Box every full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark in another colour.
3. If two verbs sit with no stop between them, put the second verb on probation.
4. The child then chooses a stop or a joining word before anyone rewrites.
5. Leave the rest of the composition closed.

If the page has no colour pencils, use a slash for verbs and a square for stops. The job is to see the leak, not to decorate the paper.

Rewrite the same paragraph once

Keep the same events. Choose past or present and stay there unless a speech line needs a change. Every sentence must have a subject, a finite verb, and a stop.

Weak: "Mei ran to the canteen she is buying noodles then her friend call her."

Pass: "Mei ran to the canteen. She bought noodles. Then her friend called her."

Fail the rewrite if a new tense appears without a time word, or if two ideas are glued with a comma only. A prettier vocabulary word does not rescue a missing stop. If the first rewrite still leaks, do not start a second paragraph. Mark again and rewrite the same lines.
