A 10-Minute Play Bout for Preschool Oral English

Tonight is a play bout, not an exam oral. Put out one toy set. Set a ten-minute timer. The parent models one short English line, then waits. The bout passes when you can write three utterances the child actually said. A worksheet after the timer is a different night. A PSLE photo card does not belong here.

Oral practice here is turn-taking, not a photo card

The child names, requests, and comments during play. That is oral English. It is not reading aloud a passage and not a PSLE stimulus photo. A silent child who points is not a failed reader. It is a speaking turn still to come. Wait through the silence once before you model another line.

Ten minutes, one toy set, parent goes second

1. Set a timer the child can see.
2. Put out one set of toys only: blocks, cars, or kitchen things.
3. Parent says one short English line, then waits.
4. Do not translate every line into the home language during the ten minutes.
5. Stop when the timer ends, even if the play is going well.

Do not add a worksheet after the timer. The bout is the talk. If the child switches toys, the timer still ends at ten. A longer Saturday session is not a better bout.

Collect three sentences the child said

• One name: "red car" or "this is the cooker".
• One request: "I want the spoon" or "more blocks".
• One comment: "it fell" or "the baby is sleeping".

Single words may count at nursery. A full sentence is the K1 or K2 target. Fail the bout only if the parent did all the talking. Correcting every error kills the next sentence. Write the three utterances after the timer, not during it.

A class is optional after three quiet bouts

If three nights produce three child sentences, keep the routine.
