What Changes in Writing From Primary 3 to Primary 4

P4 writing versus Primary 3 is not a longer story and not prettier words. The useful test is whether the latest P4 story closes the same problem it named. Read the last three sentences first. Then choose keep-home, add a plan, or look next.

The change is a finish, not fancier words

P3 often still accepts a short sequenced story. P4 school marking more often wants a problem that is closed in the last lines. New adjectives are not the test. Do not quote a universal word count. A long story that starts a new trip after "The End" still fails the P4 shift.

Read the latest P4 story backwards

Read the last three sentences first. Ask whether they close the problem named in the middle. Fail if a new event starts after the 'ending'.

  • Read the last three sentences first.
  • Name the problem in the middle of the story.
  • Ask whether those last lines close that same problem.
  • Fail if a new event starts after the ending.
  • Do not mark spelling tonight.

One story is enough for the first check. A second story only if you need to confirm a fail. Write the problem in one line at the top of the page so the ending has something to close.

Keep home, add a plan, or look next

Keep home if the finish already holds. Add a three-line plan if the middle has a problem but the end starts a new trip. Look next only if two stories in a row never name a problem.

What you do

Keep home

The finish already holds

Keep writing original school stories

Add a plan

The middle has a problem, but the end starts a new trip

Three-line plan: problem, turning point, ending

Look next

Two stories in a row never name a problem

A visit or trial, not a year-long lock

Do not switch after one short piece. No option promises a mark band. A P3 story that already finishes a problem is ahead, not a reason to start PSLE models.

This is not the P5 jump and not a PSLE class question

P5 vs P4 asks about later demand. P3 creative vs PSLE asks about class type. Tonight is only the P3-to-P4 finish.

iWorld Learning's Primary School English page currently lists 3-6 person groups and a trial. Confirm live terms. Use a class only if two P4 stories still have no finish.

FAQ

The P3 stories already finished. Should we start PSLE models in P4?

No. Keep writing original school stories. Models belong later. A strong P3 finisher is ahead of the finish test, not ready for a PSLE mill.

Is a longer story the P4 test?

No. The test is a closed problem. Length without a finish still fails.
