Pick Recount or Narrative for Tonight's PSLE Practice

PSLE English continuous writing story types, for tonight, means one choice: personal recount or narrative. Use the last marked script, not the type the child "likes". Write 20 minutes in that voice. Do not write both. Current papers may give one topic and pictures rather than labelled boxes — confirm the live SEAB format. Do not quote old mark totals as if they cannot change.

Recount sounds lived; narrative can be invented

Both types still need a complete arc and must fit the topic. The difference is the contract with the reader.

Type

Voice contract

Usual fail

Personal recount

Reads as a real or realistic "I" memory

The "I" becomes a film hero

Narrative

May invent characters and events

Diary voice with no invented problem

First person is common in a recount. It is not forbidden in a narrative if the "I" stays inside an invented story.

Pick tonight from the last marked script

Ignore the type the child prefers if the last comment points the other way.

  1. If the last comment is "sounds fake" or "not personal enough", practise recount with one real memory.
  2. If the last comment is "flat plot" or "no problem", practise narrative with one invented obstacle.
  3. Set 20 minutes. Plan for 4, write for 16.
  4. Do not write both types tonight.
  5. If there is no last comment, pick the type the child has not practised in two weeks.

Keep one voice for the full 20 minutes

Mid-story type-switching is the usual mark leak. This is not the page about a story going irrelevant. It is the page about staying in one contract.

  • Recount fails when the "I" suddenly flies, fights a stranger, or wins a contest the child never entered.
  • Narrative fails when the child drops into a diary with no invented problem.
  • Check I / he / she at the end of each paragraph.
  • If a paragraph changed person, rewrite that paragraph before adding length.

iWorld Learning's Primary School English page can mark writing if two practices in the chosen type still mix voices. Confirm live terms. No class promises a content band.

If the live paper gives pictures, the type still has to fit the topic

Choose the picture that lets you keep tonight's voice. A recount still needs a memory that matches the topic. A narrative still needs a problem the picture can carry. Do not describe all pictures to dodge the type choice. Picture rules follow the current paper, not a blog memory of an older year. Recheck SEAB's current PSLE format page before you treat any picture rule as fixed.

FAQ

Can a narrative be written in first person?

Yes, if the "I" stays inside an invented story and does not suddenly claim a real memory the plot cannot support. First person is a pronoun choice, not a recount licence.

Can I start as a recount and finish as a fantasy?

No. That is the mid-story switch this page trains you to catch. Pick one type for the 20 minutes and keep it.
